HINA VASE
Hina dolls has a long history which goes back approximately 1000 years. It is said to have originated from the custom of floating paper dolls on rivers during the « Joshi no Sekku » (one of five seasonal festivals)r, to celebrate spring and to wish for good health.
In modern times, it became customary to display dolls dressed in elegant kimonos as decorations in each Japanese household.
Hina dolls, including the male and female pair known as « Dairi-bina, » with their various unique characteristics, continue to be loved by many people regardless of the era.
Shinya Kitagawa of Nagae Ningyo continues to work as a doll maker who carries on Nagoya’s unique style. . He defies traditional conventions and boldly conceptualizes the materials and accessories that accompany the dolls, producing total works that surprise and bring joy to those who see them.
« HINA VASE » is a flower vase that allows you to enjoy the beauty and craftsmanship of Kitagawa’s doll-making all year round. It is designed by using the overlapping collars and colour gradients, a symbol of Hina dolls.
Materials born from Japanese craftsmanship were combined to create this piece:
« Koshu Inden, » boasting a 400-year tradition in Yamanashi, featuring lacquered patterns on deer leather.
« Hemp Wool, » woven on historic shuttle looms in Shizuoka.
« Owari Shippo, » a traditional Aichi craft.
